Responsibly sourced seafood

After independently assessing hundreds of wild-caught and farmed seafood products, and after four years of working closely with suppliers, WWF Australia, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Coles brand seafood is now responsibly sourced across its fresh, frozen and canned seafood departments.

The Coles brand responsible sourcing standards give customers confidence and choice to help make a difference to the environment and contribute towards a more sustainable future. Responsibly sourced seafood means Coles knows how and where its seafood is caught, ensuring fish populations and the impact on surrounding habitats and ecosystems are monitored to meet robust sourcing standards.

To help make it easier for customers to choose responsibly sourced seafood, Coles brand seafood across its range is either MSC certified (for wild-caught seafood), ASC certified (for farmed seafood) or independently assessed to meet Coles brand sourcing requirements. Coles is the first major Australian supermarket to introduce MSC and ASC labelled products across its delicatessens.

Coles will continue to review its program as the environment in which fisheries operate is complex and ever-changing. Coles is committed to responsible sourcing as it recognises well-managed and responsible fishing is essential for future sustainability.
