Bunnings brings FSC certified Merbau/Kwila to market

Bunnings has had a zero tolerance approach to illegal timber in its supply chain for almost two decades and is committed to providing responsibly sourced timber products to customers. As part of this commitment, Bunnings will begin to offer Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified Merbau/Kwila timber to New Zealand customers in late 2016.

The Merbau/Kwila is sourced from a supplier in West Papua, PT Wijaya Sentosa, which is the first large scale Indonesian forest operation to achieve FSC Forest Management certification for Merbau/Kwila timber. The FSC certification was officially achieved in March 2016, following the successful implementation of findings from a High Conservation Value assessment.

Bunnings has been working closely with PT Wijaya Sentosa since 2012 on the journey to certification, which has also been supported by WWF-Indonesia and Dutch organisation The Borneo Initiative.

Bunnings understands its responsibility to ensure the forests and communities where it sources timber derive direct and long-term benefit from well-managed forestry operations, and continues to work with suppliers to pursue responsible sourcing initiatives.
