Kmart sets long-term targets for sustainability

In 2015, Kmart started a project to develop a formal sustainability strategy, including targets and a roadmap.

As a starting point for the strategy, Kmart engaged with its team and stakeholders to understand key opportunities and risks. This included interviews with Kmart’s leadership team; a survey of its support offices, stores and distribution centre team members; external stakeholder interviews; and feedback from its customers. This engagement was supplemented by benchmark research of peer companies in Australia and globally to provide a strong foundation for the strategy.

Drawing on this research, Kmart established a series of working groups to review the evidence, agree priorities and develop long-term targets and action plans.

In June 2016 Kmart launched its sustainability plan ‘Better Together’ with the pillars People, Partners and Planet. There are five key targets:

  1. Increase Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment to three per cent of our workforce by 2020.
  2. Increase the proportion of women in leadership roles to 50 per cent by 2025.
  3. Partner with our key suppliers by 2020 to enhance the voice, capabilities and quality of life of workers in our supply chain, including a special focus on women’s empowerment.
  4. Reduce average store energy use (and therefore greenhouse gas emissions) by at least 20 per cent by 2020.
  5. Reduce waste to landfill as a percentage of units sold by at least 30 per cent by 2020.

In 2017, Kmart plans to launch a series of projects and partnerships aimed at achieving these targets.
